The Canadian Connection in Vegas

I absolutely LOVE Vegas! 

My wife and I have been going to Vegas since the 1980's. Throughout this time we've seen Vegas grow substantially, corporations racing to build mega resorts, when Mr. Steve Wynn first introduced The Mirage, Las Vegas. 

Back then you could enjoy steak and eggs for only $1.99

Since then food, entertainment and accommodations have increased considerably.  Sure, you still can get comps (complimentary) meals, rooms and entertainment. 

But first you must get there.

THE CANADIAN CONNECTION - RISING COSTS 2015

For Canadians, this year has been increasingly expensive, since our dollar has taken a nose dive, closing under 80 cents U.S.  Not to mention the increasing air fare with West Jet and Air Canada has put Canadians into a "Party Pooper Mode". 

And Canadians love to party! 

West Jet and Air Canada has just recently added on additional costs, from baggage to enjoying a 3 tier seating system.  Trust me when I say everything adds up to a considerable cost! 

To totally understand the overall cost, here's a breakdown from flight to hotels in Vegas. 

Note: These prices are relate to Canadians and doesn't include comps for  gamblers or "whales".  The overall costs is based on the average Canadian going to Vegas for their vacation.

Just today, I checked with West Jet Vacations, finding the ever increasing cost of a package. And to be fare (pun used) it's not the Vegas Hotels raising the costs. Each Vegas hotel has remarkable room savings along with complimentary bonuses, trying their best to lure you to Las Vegas. 

Canadians love going to Vegas! 

So why the increasing costs when our dollar is slumping so low?

4 DAYS IN VEGAS 

Here's a breakdown of rising costs, leaving Calgary, Alberta as an example for 4 days in Las Vegas, from Thursday - Sunday.  

NOTE: I prefer six days myself, a Tuesday to Sunday, but with increasing costs, this option is becoming unreachable. You might as head to Hawaii for this price. 

We will compare 4 Vegas Resorts, beginning with the low end, to medium, along with high end costs. 

The month we will choose is May, since Canadians usually get their tax refund the month before or sooner.  Of course, each month and prices will vary, including what's going on in Vegas.  

This past year Vegas hit a new record of over 40 millions visitors! 

Here's an example of West Jet Vacations package breakdown (includes airfare, accommodations and transfers from airport to hotel) 4 Days in Las Vegas May 2015 from Calgary for 2 : 

NOTE: These prices do not include meals or any adjustments in flight preferences. 

Upgrades of your choice of seating arrangement and extra luggage on the plane expect an extra addition of $45 CA per person.  

To be fare, (intentional pun used)  an additional upgrade of "Premium Seats" will include your choice of alcohol or regular beverage, sandwich with a bag of munchies, plus an extra baggage allowance. (So far in 2015)

Let's say you received a few awesome complimentary stays in Vegas, where the room for your 4 days are free and includes a couple buffet meals.  If that's the case, your flight with West Jet is : $1341.50  CA for 2.

So, now you know it's going to cost you from $1500 - $2500 CA for 4 days in May 2015.  

Sounds expensive enough? 

Yes.  It certainly is a chunk of change but not unreasonable, but we can't stop here for expenses. 

Next you have to consider the Daily Resort Fees each Vegas hotels add-on ranging from $20 - 30 US (not including taxes) per day! 

Add an additional $140 US for 4 Days.  That's $168.08 CA.

Sub-total : $1700 - $2700 CA (rounded off) depending on which resort you're planning to stay at. 

Great.  Now we have to add in meals and entertainment. 

On average your meals may be complimentary, but in case they aren't, let's break down the cost of meal per day.  We will pick Aria Casino & Resort as an example. 

Let's also assume you go to the buffet only once a day.  Of course there are many other options, but the price will come out to the same, considering you don't do any Fine Dining options.  Fine Dining alone can cost you between $120 - $300 US per meal for two guests.

Breakfast:

Monday - Friday

$19.99 US (doesn't include taxes) 

Lunch:

Also, they like to up-sell : All day, add $12.99 US for unlimited Mimosas, Bellinis, Bloody Marys, Sangria, Champagne, Premium Beer and Wine on TAP.

In the 4 days at this particular resort, let's say you decide on this combination: 

Thursday /Day One - Dinner Buffet $38 (includes tax) x 2 = $72 US

Friday / Day Two - Gourmet Dinner Buffet $42 (includes tax) x 2 = $84 US

Saturday/ Day Three - Brunch $32 (includes tax) x 2 = $64 US

Sunday / Day Four - Same/ Brunch $32 x 2 = $64 US 

Sub-total for meals = $284 US or $340.96 CA 

With coffee and/or small meals, midnight snacks and/or treats add on another $200 US or $241 CA to your food budget during your stay.

Sub-total = $581 CA Food costs for 4 Days.  Let's round it off to $600 CA just in case. 

Once again, depending on your gambling expenses you may be comped for the above meals.

BUT - Don't count on it! 

OK.  Here's the sub-total which includes Flight, Hotel, Transfers and Meals.  Sub-total : $2400 - $3400 CA (taxes included)

"Oh, but what about entertainment?" You may ask. 

Entertainment is definitely a must in Vegas. Your in Vegas, so it only makes since to gambling, right? 

After all, you just might WIN MONEY - right? 

Think again! 

Be sure any money towards gambling is part of your entertainment budget! Don't expect to WIN anything. Then, if you do, it's a bonus. Go out and treat yourself to the Fine Dining or favourite show you missed or always wanted to see. 

Just don't count on WINNING- please! 

Let's say during your 4 days, you want to go to a show at Cirque du Soleil, for example. Average cost per person can be from $130 x 2 = $260 US (not including tax). Sure. You can pick the rear balcony seats at $69 US per person, it's up to you.  My wife doesn't recommend it.

Alright, now let's say you want a helicopter experience, flying across the Vegas Strip during the evening.  Wonderful experience and highly recommended.  Our trip with Maverick Helicopters was certainly a blast.  The cost is : $124 US per person x 2 = $248 US or $297.74 CA

Honestly - we had great service with Maverick Helicopters.

Anyway, let's move on. For most of us, gambling, of course, is going to be a part of your entertainment budget, you'll need to consider.  I'll assume  you're a beginner and on a tight budget. Let's start off with $300 US per day for two. 

Gambling Total for 4 days = $1200 US or $1450 CA 

This is a low estimate, you can easily spend $300 per person each day you visit Vegas.  The sky is the limit, depending on your budget, so most experienced gamblers would laugh at my small tight budget.  

But, it's really important to consider what YOU can afford before going to Vegas, otherwise you will be really disappointed and financial in trouble! 

Sub-Total for just gambling and entertainment is $1907 CA. Let's round it off to $2000 CA. 

OK. Now we are ready for the Grand Total for Canadians traveling to Vegas for 4 Days in Vegas.

GRAND TOTAL:  Between  $4500 - $5400 CA in May 2015/ 2 guests at 4 Days. 

Of course, it all depends on how long you stay and what your resort will give as complimentary bonuses (highly depends on your gambling and weekly specials). 

The ratio is $675 CA per day each; it should be $400 CA per day. 

For example, in 2010, we stayed at The Excalibur Resort & Casino in November, costing us $1100 CA for 7 days, including air fare. Since then however, prices have been climbing considerably.  

In 2014 the Aria Casino & Resort was double, not including meals or entertainment; plus it was only five days. 

Depending on your Canadian lifestyle, you may decide on staying only for three days.

But, once you see the FUN in Vegas, you'll realize staying 4 - 5 days makes sense. Vegas is already Canadians yearly vacation, but for how much longer? 

After discussing these prices to a few of my American friends, they too, find these prices high. 

Unfortunately there are only 50 million people in Canada, with an outstanding 250 million U.S. Citizens in United States of America. Logic dictates, the masses will always get the better price. 

Canadians always get the short end of the stick when it comes to traveling, even in our own country.  

The Vegas tourism Industry is doing everything in their power to encourage visitors to Las Vegas, now it's up to our own Canadian traveling carriers to give us a break in prices.

With respect, Americans and Las Vegas won't suffer if Canadians stop coming to Vegas, but it will be a real shame for us all.

REVENUE GAIN AND LOSSES

In return, Vegas main objective is to make MONEY, lots of it. Operations within just one mega resort costs millions of dollars to run per day.  Without a doubt, their overhead costs are substantial high.  They rely on gambling, food & beverage and entertainment too feed its appetite on a daily basis. 

But, don't worry for Vegas Resorts in general, most are doing well. 

For example - Wynn Resorts, Limited (Nasdaq: WYNN) last week reported financial results for the first quarter ended March 31, 2014.*

For the quarter ended March 31, 2014, net revenues were $380.9 million, a 1.5% decrease from $386.6 million in the first quarter of 2013.*

Corporations as a whole, have losses in one resort casino to financial gains in another (world-wide) off-setting their overall net revenue. 

Even though each Vegas Resort offers its patrons gambling opportunities, they don't gamble on their business decisions. Like any business, their financial statement must add up or they will be out of business, for sure.

CONCLUSION

In the end, Vegas is a thriving oasis with operational successes and failures, since the very day they broke ground. The old is replaced by the new. 

Will Canadians keep coming to Vegas ? 

Of course they will, but only those who can afford a spending budget of $6000 - $25,000.

Are they going to miss the average middle-class Canadian? 

I'm not sure.  

All I know, it would be a damn shame, if I have to pick another vacation spot closer to home.  For Vegas Lovers, like myself, it would certainly be heart breaking.

Who doesn't remember the 1987 film, "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" with John Candy and Steve Martin?

It's a comical look of two individuals with completely different lifestyles trying to get home for the holidays. John Candy plays character Del Griffith, a mishap salesman who sells shower curtain rings to hotel chains. Steve Martin plays a sophisticated controlling businessman basically forced to
cross country with Del, who he finds extremely annoying. But, in the end, he learns something about himself, realizing you can't control the world around you and close friends are made in the strangest circumstances.

Facebook is a good example, where you pleasantly find a new friend, not even close to your lifestyle. With millions of followers it certainly has become the hub to new friendships. It's also a great spot to find Facebook Pages, helping you plan your traveling adventures, from planes, trains and automobiles.

Traveling these days can be very stressful, so it only makes sense to plan it well ahead, using every source of information to suit your interest, lifestyle and budget.

Every business on Facebook is trying their best to entice you to try out their product, service or resort. Each one with their own personal agenda. And this is where I come in, Vegas Reviews.

Not a business, my blogs are unbiased, with its only agenda to inform viewers of the best entertainment, resorts, restaurants and tours by my experiences only. And the best part, I only let you know of the good, NOT the bad and ugly. There are already too many websites trashing businesses. I look strictly at the FUN and PLEASANT experiences in Vegas.  It's simple really; if I find a business or entertainment I found unfavorable, I will never promote or even mention them.

The resorts themselves, are busy advertising, in order to find you,"the best bang for your buck", so its not necessary for me to head down that rabbit hole.  Each of my viewers have the option to read my blogs and decide for themselves which resort will suit their lifestyle and budget.

On a worldwide view of Vegas, the best prices are unquestionably suited for Americans in their homeland, which is totally understandable. They have the option of a short vacation without hurting their pocketbook.  Whereas in Canada, it's not as easy because of the cost of airfare, but still at a very competitive price.  But never under estimate the rest of the world.  Las Vegas has recently broken its own record.

It quickly signifies Las Vegas as one of the top tourist hot spots in the world. I have met people from Australia, UK, France, Italy and Germany, just to name a few.  What is really interesting about their traveling plans, they come all this way to stay for only 3 - 4 days. A good example of this, is when I stayed at the Venetian,  I met a couple all the way from England who were previously introduced to Vegas by their invite to a wedding. It was then they were hooked on the FUN Vegas has to offer. Next year they were back, on a last minute flight, for only 3 days long.


It tells you the power of advertising and the lasting impression Vegas leaves behind.

My wife and I have been going to Vegas since the early 1980's, giving us the opportunity to express our experiences, what to do and not to do. But, Sin City is forever changing its landscape, policies and prices.

It only makes sense to head to Vegas two to three times a year, just to keep up on this ever changing city.

Going to Vegas has some rules to keep in mind. For example, never go to Sin City thinking your going to make money.  Trust me when I say, Vegas wouldn't be offer their great room prices if the gambling wasn't on their side. Of course, if you consider yourself a professional gambler, then go for it. But for the rest of us, the truth of gambling depends strictly on luck.


I'm not lucky, so I pay close attention to my budget, making sure I never become overwhelmed by rash decisions.


An example of this was one inexperienced viewer who decided to go to Vegas for the first time. Unfortunately, they didn't take the time to read my blogs, explaining the risks associated with Vegas. They were overwhelmed and quickly stated,"... Vegas is over-rated".

It's true.

Vegas can be overwhelming on your first or even fourth stay, so it's so important to take baby steps with a tight budget you can afford. And, never ever go outside that budget.


There is so much to do and see in Vegas, it's impossible to see it all at once. My first time arriving in Vegas, I too was overwhelmed. It was then I quickly learned how to enjoy Vegas, without going home broke.


Back then, seeing The Mirage just being built by Mr. Steve Wynn, I knew Vegas was going to be something very, very special. Vegas was headed to be the best hot spot in North America, thanks to Steve Wynn's entrepreneur vision.

The best words to explain the luxurious Aria Resort & Casino in the heart of Las Vegas City Centre would be,"Heaven on Earth".

My first experience being dropped off in front of the majestic hotel is the attention to detail, showcasing an architectural glass foyer with a waterfall cascading down its sleek dark granite walls, giving you this immediate calming effect. Professional employees are ready to assist, making your stay comfortable.


Months before going to Las Vegas, we always check out all our options,making sure our stay is the most enjoyable possible. Aria Resort and Casino wasn't any different.  We asked for a couple of "Special Requests" which I noticed they offered on their website.

This was their reply:

Dear Mr. Demers,

Thank you for your most recent email. We are delighted to confirm your reservation for an arrival __________ for 5 evenings and to inform you that our Supervisor has approved the 2 options you are requesting, the Express Check-in option and the Late Check-out option...

Without any hesitation, we were pleased with their response and already felt welcomed, months before our arrival.

We counted down the days to our first visit to ARIA Resort. Exciting!

Checking In 

Upon arriving at the Express Check-in we were cheerfully greeted by a young man in his twenties.  Skillfully he quickly attended to our requests.  Needless to say, check-in was seamless.

I must of looked hesitate, because he looked concerned and pleasantly said," Was there anything else we can assist you with Sir?"

I said,"No, not now, thank you."

But actually I was sort of concerned with our room being on the 16th floor, but I opted to check out the room before I said anything. I always feel uncomfortable if I have to barter for another room, if the room isn't what I hope for.


Even though the long walk from the elevators was concerning, the room was exactly what I expected. Entering our room, the remote control entrance automatically summoned the sheers to open, revealing the beautiful tropical courtyard below featuring an array of inviting pools.

To our surprise, the courtyard pool view from our room was gratefully granted.

Further investigation, we quickly noticed our requested deluxe King-size bed. Each room comes with the added features of the touch screen control Pad or accessing the Flat screen TV featuring remote sheer curtains, wake-up control, room service, music options, lighting and temperature control along with watching TV.



















The washroom facilities were also acceptable to our standards with its glass cased rain-shower and deep bathtub displaying all the towels anyone would ever need.

At first we had to hunt down where the security safe was, thinking it would be in the closet, like most hotels we have visited in Vegas. It was funny to notice inside the left closet to the immediate entrance, there was a small signage stating the location of the safe. It so happen to be inside the side-draw of our bed. Interesting spot for a safe, but it worked and that's all that really mattered. 

I'm figuring most guests were either calling about where the safe was or opening the same closet doors before us, for them to have signage directing us to the right place.   Or maybe they just thought of this ahead.   Whatever the case, the signage was a good call.

The room on the 16th floor was like "Home Away from Home" featuring all the comforts one would expect in a AAA Five Diamond Resort.

My only suggestion, if you have trouble walking (health concerns) or need to be close to an elevator, I would suggest the 25 floor and above.

Heading out to explore the vast ARIA Resort, we were greeted by the maid staff with a courtesy smile, along with allowing us "First" access along the hallways. A very nice "extra" chester incorporated by management, I'm thinking.

My first couple of hours after check-in I decided to treat myself to a couple of beer at the "Lobby Bar" , while my wife decided to do some gambling. I was quickly greeted by a friendly bartender who suggested Aria's flagship "Cabaletta" draft beer, a homemade brew which turned out to be an excellent choice.

The Cabaletta beer cost $9.00 per glass.

During our stay at Aria, "The Buffet" was deemed to be our best choice offering breakfast, lunch and dinner. The Buffet is located on the second floor called the "Promenade".

For breakfast we had the usual options of bacon,ham,sausages, scrambled eggs and hash-browns. To our delightful surprise, they offered freshly made eggs Benedict and omelettes of your choice. Each buffet always displayed fresh seafood, such as crab, eat and peel shrimp, baked salmon, clams and mussels.

The desserts we're all "dream-like" with your taste-buds captivating every bite. Being a "chocoholic", my desiring fix was granted.


Lunch and Dinner offered Prime Rib, roasted chicken, Bavarian assorted sausages with accompanied condiments.  Each displayed a Mexican, Asian, Tandoori, or an Italian flare along with New York style Pizza to suit any worldly guest.

The pricing of the buffets:

Breakfast: [Monday - Friday] $19.95 per person (7:00am - 11:00am)

One day we had the breakfast, other days the lunch or dinner buffets, including the brunch on Saturday and the Gourmet Dinner on Friday.  Each time we weren't disappointed by the fine food selections at "The Buffet".


Throughout our stay at Aria Resort and Casino, we had a few "comp" credits by using our "MyVegas Rewards" which I highly recommend.  Most of our buffets didn't cost us a dime due to using our rewards.

Exploring Aria Resort and Casino was certainly a must on our list, locating the grand Convention Centre with easy access to a Business Office, the decorative Zarkana Cirque du Soleil Theatre, the fitness centre and Spa, including my favourite, the pool courtyard.

All the above are also located on the "Promenade", second floor of the Aria hotel.

The vast courtyard with each pool nestled in between a tropical garden landscape could be described like walking through your very own Eden.

In short, it's paradise!

The service was impeccable starting with friendly greetings by security whom we soon became friends, during our many visits to the pool. From the bartenders, the bikini bar maids to the front staff offering you towels, they were all professional and courtesy.

Each day coming out from the guest elevators we either past by or went into Jean Philippe Patisserie restaurant. This time of the year you can see Halloween displays, like the well crafted witch.




























One night we decided to enjoy a pizza at Five50 Pizza Bar, ordering out a full "Gotham" (pepperoni, sausage, salami, mozzarella and Grana Padano) pizza pie. We ordered the $28 pizza to go because we wanted to relax in our room.

The pizza was simply delicious!

The ARIA is a upscale lavish Resort with an array of fine dining opportunities to choose from.


This particular visit we didn't have a chance to try out Jean Georges Steakhouse or Javiers, but we noticed passing by each restaurant, they were certainly filled on a daily basis. My suggestion would be to make reservations ahead to avoid any disappointment.

Being in Vegas, you always want to get most of your stay, so late evenings were just another typical day.

This particular evening, I tried out "In Room Dining" and wasn't disappointed by the great service from the time I phoned to when the meal was brought up to our room. It was just a "Classic Burger" but it was one of the best burgers I had in a long time. 

Excellent service!

Zarkana at Aria Resort & Casino, Las Vegas

On our last Friday evening in Vegas we made plans to see Zarkana by Cirque du Soleil. Once again, we weren't disappointed by the experienced performers keeping us entertained throughout.

If you haven't seen Cirque du Soleil, it's a must on your list!
